    I actually looked at the Sistine Chapel floor. It is marble tile in geometric patterns. The style is common in old churches in Rome.

    According to http://romanchurches.wikia.com/wiki/Cappella_Sistina “The floor is Cosmatesque, and was made in the reign of Pope Nicholas V (1447–1455); thus it pre-dates the rest of the chapel”.
