Glamorgan versus Somerset: Vitality Blast Twenty20

After a little drinks reception in the School of Physics and Astronomy (at which I was given a very nice gift of wine) I joined the staff outing to Sophia Gardens to watch this evening’s Twenty20 cruise cricket between Glamorgan and Somerset.
The start was delayed by rain so we lingered in a pub on the way only to be caught on the hop when play actually started and missing the first few overs. Somerset batted well to reach 190 off their 20 overs, with Anderson hitting four big sixes in his 59.
Without Shaun Marsh, who will miss the rest of the season, the Glamorgan batting lineup seemed to have a very long tail and a lot rested on Khawaja and Ingram. Both scored runs quickly while they were in but neither could build a big score. Once those two were out, the Glamorgan innings faltered and they never looked like reaching Somerset’s total. The finished on 160 for 9, losing by 30 runs.

The game on Friday rather fizzled out after Glamorgan’s fast start to their innings, after Ingram and Khawaja got out and Somerset severely restricted the run rate in the middle overs.
But that was as nothing compared to the calamity on Monday at Hove, when I arrived at the ground 40 mins late and was told by the gateman that Glamorgan were 18 for 5. They recovered slightly to 85 all out, followed on 242 behind, and did marginally better second time around, 88 all out. The Sussex bowling was very good especially Archer, and Glamorgan’s young batsmen were outclassed. Each innings took precisely one session without extensions, and the game ended at 7pm, just as the floodlights were starting to come on.Lovely day at least.
Ah and no hope of finding you on Friday night, surprisingly large crowd, though I think it was my first Friday night T20 at Sophia Gardens.

Yes, the performance against Sussex was truly dire. Some weeks I toyed with the idea of arranging a trip to that game but decided against it. I’m glad I did. Glamorgan’s team looked very weak on paper, but even so…
I was with a group of about 20 people from Physics & Astronomy on Friday. It was a good crowd overall.

On the bright side, Glamorgan have already finished bottom of their division in the RLODC, and will probably be bottom of Division 2 of the Championship, which means they’re in line for a remarkable Treble if they can finished bottom of the Twenty20 too!

They should at least get mid-table in the Twenty20 as they have had some very impressive away wins so far, rather like last year in fact, though last year they had most home games rained off while this year they’ve had 2 disappointing lossesat home. Anyway I’m heading to their away game at Cheltenham on Friday, it being one of my favourite cricket grounds. Last time I was there, in 2013, Glamorgan batted first and got 98-9 in 20 overs, and Gloucs won by 9 or 10 wickets in about 12 overs. Let’s see what happens this time. In any case I’ll already be into the second half of my short cricket-watching season.

I may go to the home games against Glocs and/or Essex as I have to go to the Cardiff residence to sort out the shipping of some of my books.
I am tempted to see some of the County Championship match versus Durham, but not sure I can stay for both days.

Cheltenham turned out to be a very similar game to the Somerset game you went too, as Gloucs got a bit more than they looked like getting, 197-6, with about 26 off the last 7 balls. Then Glamorgan started well but faded away to lose by 30 runs, though they were probably in the game a bit longer than they were against Somerset, being 104-2 at halfway.
My remaining T20 games will be at Richmond, London v Middlesex on 5 Aug which is a new ground for me, at least for cricket (though I suspect it’s where I used to go and watch London Welsh play rugby when I lived in London), and at Cardiff against Hampshire on 10 Aug, then I go to the Test at Lords on the 11th and back to Mexico on the 12th

Well, at least there was a better result yesterday!

Well, Glamorgan managed to chase down 194 to win last night without Ingram. That’s six wins out of six at the Oval.
