Update: I’ve just heard the sad news that Aretha Franklin died today (Thursday 16th August 2018) at her home.

I listened to her songs last night and realised they were all covered by The Committments, that wonderful 80s Irish film about a Soul band formed in Dublin.

I don’t know why but some people get very snobbish about people who write great popular songs. It’s true that writing a hit tune is not the same as writing a symphony, but if you think that means it’s easy you should try writing one!
