The Hundred

I saw this on Twitter recently and thought I’d share it because I found it fascinating. Taken from here and it shows the evolution of the word “hundred” across Indo-European languages:

    The evolution from a hard c to a soft c to h is fairly clear.

    Interestingly Irish has a “broad c” and a “slender c” depending on the adjacent vowel and the changing position of the tongue in the mouth in pronouncing these clearly explains this evolution.
