Astronomy Plot of the Week

Pictures made by observational astronomers, like the one I featured a couple of days ago, often feature on various sites as “Astronomy Pic of the Week” or such. I’ve often thought that this disadvantages astrophysicists of the more theoretical sort and wondered why don’t we do same with graphical illustrations of other kinds. On that basis, I offer this (found here) as my inaugural Astrophysics Plot of the Week:

Its explanatory power is matched by its simplicity and elegance.

  1. I’m so old I remember when our department had a draughtswoman – you would give her a hand-drawn diagram and she would produce a proper diagram in ink on transparent paper. This would then be sent to the journal so they could typeset it and generate a page for the journal. Imagine trying to draw the above by hand….

I remember there being such a person at Sussex, though it was a he and worked in Engineering. I sometimes took stuff that I’d done on the computer and printed out on a crummy printer to get it turned into acceptable plots for a paper.

      • Each department had a draughtsperson. As well as work for the department, she also did private work doing figures for PhD theses, for which (I recall) she charged 50p per page. We also had a glassblower.

Basically, this invalidates LCDM, Mond and the Standard model, unless I misunderstood.
