PHANGS for the galaxies…

I couldn’t resist sharing this wonderful set of images from JWST courtesy of the PHANGS* team showing exquisite details of 19 face-on spiral galaxies as seen in the infra-red:

*For those of you not in the know, PHANGS stands for Particularly Horrible Acronym Not Generated Sensibly Physics at High Angular resolution in Nearby GalaxieS.

  1. I think your acronym for PHANGS is better than the real one… Especially as yours is a true acronym, which according to the definitions I have read is formed from the first letters of the words. Don’t know what ones made up from random letters in the words are called. My only very minor achievement in astrophysics is coming up with (true) acronyms for some instruments….
