Carabao Cup Winners!

I’m old enough to remember when the Carabao Cup was called the League Cup, and I’m (just) old enough to remember Newcastle United winning the Fairs Cup in 1969.  I’m also old enough to remember countless cup final defeats, but I’m not old enough to remember the last time The Toon won a domestic trophy (the FA Cup in 1955), so today’s victory against Liverpool presents a unique opportunity to celebrate a Cup success. Even if it isn’t the most important piece of silverware, such an event is something I’d taken for granted I’d never be able to blog about!

As the late President Jimmy Carter put it, Howay the Lads!

  1. @telescoper.blog WHAT! Had no idea President Carter A) is an honorary Geordie and B) busted out with a ‘Howay the Lads’

That was a time I’d have been proud of our president. Different age.

  2. Given their owners I am not sure its something to celebrate…

I’m as unhappy as anyone with the ownership of Newcastle United. Even that can’t prevent me having a sentimental attachment to the team, however, as Newcastle upon Tyne is the town of my birth.

      • I can understand Newcastle fans celebrating. Its not their fault who bought the club – its the FA and the Government.

As a Liverpool fan that was a very depressing game. Every change produced more shabbles it seemed, but can’t begrudge Newcastle winning it. They were a lot more enthusiastic about it all. Worried Liverpool might not limp over the line in the league now…
