Another rare event…

I was just thinking yesterday that it can’t often have happened that a scientific meeting has been curtailed by a volcano, at least not in Britain, when I see another rare event took place earlier in the week in America.

I’m just glad that Howard County (Is this right? Ed.) was there to record this fireball, although I think that’s quite a strange name for a policeman … (You’re fired. Ed.)

If you see one of these go over the horizon then you presumably have no way of knowing how big it is and whether it has just come down 1000 miles away and is about to terminate all life on earth. The scene in Deep Impact (the best of the giant-meteorite-hits-the-earth films a decade ago) where the resulting tsunami comes at the camera is one of the few scenes in cinema which had me gripping the seat tightly.

I’m just surprised he didn’t try to follow it.
