My Old Man’s A Dustman

Apologies for the frivolity during the strike, but what are we ordinary Council Tax payers to do when their City turns into an enormous rubbish dump? You have to laugh sometimes, otherwise you’ll die of cholera.

But seriously, I know the refuse collectors are having a raw deal but the strike is affecting the people of Brighton, not the managers at the Council who are responsible for the problem (and are still collecting their salaries just as we are still paying our Council Tax). A serious public health issue is developing as a result of the strike and, well, two wrongs don’t make a right…

The managers and the strikers are BOTH responsible for the non-collection and are, so far as I am aware, both collecting their salaries. I have no in-depth knowledge of the issue between them and no intention of apportioning blame, but I agree with the latter sentence above about two wrongs. I hope it will be resolved soon.

Striking workers do not get paid for the time they are on strike.

Agreed, however, that it takes two sides to have a dispute like this and there is blame on both sides. By “responsible” I really meant “in charge”.

Do the strikers lose those allowances which are part of the issue as well as basic salary while on strike?

        Yes.

I should add that the GMB union has stumped up Β£100K for a “hardship fund” which will cover all pay for all workers for about a week.
