Some years ago I completed the transition from audiocassette to CD, in the process of which I dumped my cassette of TS Eliot himself reading the Quartets, in favour of the Scofield CD. Infinitely superior!

While it is obviously interesting to hear the poet reading his own work, I find TS Eliot’s rendition rathet prissy and didactic. Scofield makes it come alive brilliantly. It’s definitely the best I’ve heard.

When audiobooks had their first vogue about 15 years ago I bought lots of poetry read by good readers. Gielgud was very fine.

Gielgud recorded an excellent set of Shakespeare’s Sonnets which I have.
