Talking About Open Access
By way of a sequel to my Colloquium in the same series earlier this summer, a fortnight today (on 15th September 2021) I will be doing another talk for the Ecole Internationale d’Astrophysique Daniel Chalonge – Hector de Vega. This won’t be an actual science talk but instead will be about Open Access publishing in general and about the Open Journal of Astrophysics in particular.
The talk is of course free but you need to register here to get the Zoom link. It’s at 4pm Paris Time (which is 3pm Irish Time).

@telescoper Regarding the OAJ (a great initiative): I’d like to ask something I’m suddenly curious about, if you don’t mind. How do you deal with the situation where the journal might be willing to accept the paper but the arXiv will not (or will not accept it in the astro-ph classification)? I thought this was a very rare occurrence, but it appears it is not that rare.

That situation hasn’t arisen yet, largely because we encourage authors to post on arXiv before submission to OJAp.
If the situation did arise we might ask arXiv to reconsider or we might reconsider our policy. We do (subject to refereeing) accept papers that are cross-listed, by the way.
As far as I remember we have only rejected one paper that was submitted to us via a non-astro-ph part of arXiv with no cross-listing: we rejected it in line with our published policy.

Do you think that this points to a potential problem that the editors of OJAp are not the gatekeepers of the arXiv, or do you simply accept that this is part of the OJAp’s review process: effectively that there is a two step process for the OJAp, first arXiv moderation and then editorial/peer review at OJAp?

We are an arXiv overlay journal so acceptance on arXiv is in some sense part of our editorial process.
