Book Marking

Following on from the fogeydom displayed in my previous post, I wonder how many of my readers ever use bookmarks? I do. In fact, I have a collection that goes back at least 20 years (part of which is shown above).

(I don’t remember how I got the Harry Potter one, as I haven’t read any of those books…)

  1. Always use bookmarks. People who mark their places in books by bending the pages should not be allowed anywhere near books. I have a lot of the paper ones but also some magnet ones, which don’t fall out of the book if you accidentally drop it.

As you might expect, I do use bookmarks and have a number, including a rather splendid Moomin one that I laminated, plus a more recent one of a stained glass image of St Dorothea from St Martin-on-the-Hill in Scarborough. Always get a tad annoyed by turned down pages in library books and/or spillage of any description on books.

For some reason that reminds me that I used to have a very nice laminated one featuring the Book of Kells, which I got on my very first trip to Dublin in the 1990s and which I now sadly seem unable to find.

If I ever see one of the Book of Kells, I’ll be sure to purchase and send it to you!

  3. I impudently admit I do bend pages in my own books (I’d never do the same on public books). But independently from use, I agree they may be nice objects to collect either as keepsakes or as sort of gadgets.
