The Inaugural Euclid Spain Meeting

So here I am at the Institut de Ciencies de L’Espai (ICE-CSIC) which is on the campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (UAB) for the first ever Euclid Spain Meeting. This involved a 40-minute trip on the S2 train from Plaça de Catalunya, which is a short walk from my apartment, then a short walk from the railway station at UAB through the campus to the Institute.

I was able to speak at this meeting because I happen to be in Barcelona right now. I mean that I was able to attend because I was in Barcelona anyway, not that the meeting was held because I am in Barcelona!

Anyway, I gave my talk early on this morning, so have been able to enjoy the rest of the day having got that out of the way. There are about 50 people here. It’s great to see the sizable Euclid community in Spain getting together and sharing their work.

P.S. My surname always causes some amusement in Spain, as “Coles” means “Cabbages” in Spanish…

And in German. Perhaps a really old word that the (Germanic) Visigoths or Vandals brought to Spain in their westward invasion/migration as the western half of the Roman Empire crumbled? Andalusia was once Vandalusia!

By the way, I was at a day’s county cricket today for the first time this season, Worcestershire vs Durham – the two promoted teams – at Kidderminster, since the ground at Worcester hasn’t recovered yet from a Severn flood which dumped silt on it. Today was day 2 and Durham’s day – they took 6 wickets to gain a first innings lead of 60, and closed the day on 319-5 including a partnership of 195 for the 3rd wicket.

I got two days county cricket in at Lords before flying back to Mexico, the first 2 days of the season. Glamorgan 620-3dec, Sam Northeast 335 not out. As I was also present for most of his 410 not out at Leicester 2 years ago, I’m sure he’ll be putting me on his personal guestlist soon.

I have been present when a batsman reached 300 in a first class match, Mike Hussey at Bristol.

When Sam Northeast hit that 410* he was 32 years old and had never reached 200 before. Two years later he has broken the first class record for an individual innings at Lords. This is late development with a vengeance!
