I couldn’t resist posting these two hilarious pictures of Donald Turnip’s visit to the Áras an Uachtaráin in Phoenix Park yesterday to meet the President of Ireland, Catherine Connolly. Her expression in the first picture is priceless, and the second one looks like she sent him away with a flea in his ear.
It seems that Trump said that he “would love to see” a united Ireland, which is quite a surprising statement to come from an Orange Man…

This Englishman does not covet the soil of Ulster, but I considered for much of my lifetime that there would be significant Catholic persecution of protestants in Northern Ireland were unification to have taken place.
Since then, however, the Catholic church has lost all authority in Ireland due to the abuse scandals and (especially) their coverup. So I wouldn’t mind a united Ireland in the slightest.
One problem is the huge shot in the arm that it would give to the ScotNats. Scotland, England and Wales inhabit the large island known as Great Britain, and are better off under unified political leadership.
I have been mystified at the reaction of some Irish people I know from the Republic when I say that as far as I am concerned they are welcome to the North. They reply that it’s too much trouble – mostly economic. It’s up to them but I find it weird.

I would love to see a United Ireland but there needs to be a lot of work on proposals as to what its governance would look like before a Border Poll can be done.
For one thing, the Republic is excessively concentrated on Dublin. Unification would be a way of rebalancing this. Only six of the nine counties of Ulster are in NI. A United Ulster could be part of a much more devolved structure.

On another subject, I was in a sports TV pub last night for the last of the South Africa vs New Zealand rugby Tests. The quality of the rugby was frighteningly good. I don’t see how the northern hemisphere can have much hope.
