Why did I post it?
After last week’s Opera (with its design influenced by constructivism) I was looking through a book of Russian avant-garde art of the early 20th century and thought I’d post this example of suprematism, by Malevich because I like it.
Suprematicism and constructivism are quite distinct movements, but share some common elements, especially the focus on abstract geometrical forms.
Why did the painter paint it?
He’s long dead so you can’t ask him, but I’d like to think it was so that 101 years later it would still annoy people.

To the latter, money or madness. But let us not blame the artist, for there has always been trash; the problem lies in a culture that values this stuff as art.
