Maynooth Open Day Preview

No sooner has the examination period finished when we have to start thinking about admissions again. There is an Open Day at Maynooth coming up on Saturday 27th June. Covid-19 restrictions still being in place this is once again a virtual event that will take place between 10am and 2pm. I will be online for that period to answer queries about Theoretical and Mathematical Physics at Maynooth University. You can sign up for the event here.

In the meantime, to whet your appetite, here is a little video introduction I recorded for the Open Dday for our Double Major BSc programme in Theoretical Physics & Mathematics (codename: MH206)

  1. Is physics without labs really a good idea?

It is if you hate labs. Students who want to do Experimental Physics at Maynooth University can pick it as a separate subject.

      • Hate labs, or are scared of it? Maybe I am a bit too cautious, but I feel that physics students benefit from doing some experimental work. If nothing else, it helps employability and makes it easier to move specialisation. Admittedly, labs were never my favourite part.

I think these days learning how to code is far more useful for employability than fiddling about with resistors and capacitors..

      • Is that because we have lost the ability to design and build hardware?

Yes, we need to keep our curriculum modern. There is no need to teach the students how things were done a century ago. But I feel that a rounded physics student should know something about how experiments work and what the pitfalls are, regardless of specialisation. And I know that many students don’t feel that way.
