When UKATC astronomer Dr. Russell Crowe was younger, he bore a striking resemblance to hell-raising rough diamond Australian actor Chris Evans. Perhaps they share a common ancestry?

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Edward Tattsyrup, Mark Cropper on October 29, 2013 by telescoperI wonder if anyone else has noticed that if Mark Cropper, sinister proprietor of the local shop in Royston Vasey, were to take off his glasses, he would look strangely like astronomer Prof. Edward Tattsyrup of the Mullard Space Science Laboratory. This is most unsettling. I wonder if, by any chance, they might be related?

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Ant Whitworth, Astronomy Look-ali, Robin Williams on May 12, 2013 by telescoperI hadn’t previously noticed the similarity demonstrated in these photographs between zany comedian and character actor Ant Whitworth and my former colleague and happy go-lucky Sunderland supporter Prof. Robin Williams. I wonder if, by any chance, they might be related?

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Brian Cox, look-alikes on February 6, 2013 by telescoperMy attention was drawn yesterday to this remarkable photograph of a very young Professor Brian Cox, the famous particle physicist turned astronomer biologist and media star. I believe it was taken while he was a member of a popular beat combo of some sort. Before seeing this picture I hadn’t realized what people meant when they referred to him as a TV celebrity ….
…geddit? Anyway, I have to say I think the look rather suits him!
I haven’t got time today to trawl the interwebs looking for a lookey-likey, so it’s time for a bit of crowd-sourcing. Anyone care to suggest a celebrity likeness?
P.S. I have done a look-alike for Prof. Cox already.

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Alberto Vecchio, Astronomy Look-alikes, Sean Penn on January 24, 2013 by telescoperBad-boy Hollywood actor-director Alberto Vecchio bears a striking resemblance to Birmingham University’s gravitational wave physicist (and former Cardiff University postdoc) Sean Penn. I’ve long suspected that gravitational waves were pure Hollywood, but I’m still looking forward to Advanced LIGO, the movie, in which our hero single-handedly discovers a stochastic background of tensor perturbations from the epoch of inflation.

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Kenny Everett, Richard Bower on January 2, 2013 by telescoperThe resemblance between wacky comedian Richard Bower and Durham University astrophysicist Prof. Kenny Everett is too strong to be disguised even by a flamboyant wig. Surely there must be a family connection?

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags John Major, Jonathan Pritchard on December 19, 2012 by telescoperAt the Winter School I attended recently I was struck by the not inconsiderable similarity in both sound and appearance between Dr Jonathan Pritchard of Imperial College and former Prime Minister Sir John Major. Oh yes. I wonder if, by any chance, they might be related?

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Andre Villas-Boas, Elias Brinks on December 16, 2012 by telescoperApparently, while I was away, Elias Brinks, the manager of Tottenham Hotspur (which seems to be some sort of football team), came to Cardiff to examine a PhD thesis scouting for new players to sign. One of the locals was struck by his resemblance to Andre Villas-Boas, the well-known astrophysicist from the University of Hertfordshire. I wonder if by any chance they might be related?

Tiziano Crudeli, and Italian physicist and advocate of inhomogeneous cosmological models, Luciano Pietronero? I wonder what odds Ladbrokes are offering against a fractal Universe? Game on!

Posted in Astronomy Lookalikes with tags Gary Fuller, Ned Flanders, The Simpsons on July 24, 2012 by telescoperNot a lot of people know that the inspiration for Gary Fuller, Homer’s neighbour in the popular cartoon animation series The Simpsons, was provided by Manchester University astronomer Ned Flanders. (Is this right? Ed.)
