In the Dark

I thought I would make a record (for posterity, if there ever is such a thing) of the evolution of the number of confirmed cases of Covid-19 (Coronavirus) in Ireland after the first case on 29th February; 12th March 2020 was when Schools and Colleges in the Republic were closed). I will update the data on this page after the daily briefing by the HSE, and update the plot whenever I get the time.

There have been changes in testing frequency and strategy over this time so one can’t use these numbers reliably to track the growth of the epidemic. Each number should really be treated as just a lower limit on the actual number of cases. It is worth stating also that the “daily” cases are those reported on a given day not those that necessarily happened on that day: there can be a lag, for example, between a death occurring and it being reported officially. I’ve resisted the temptation to fit a model because the changes in testing and reporting are difficult to incorporate. Because (a) the data are quite noisy and (b) there is a likely “weekend effect” in reporting, I’ve decided to present the results from now on as 7-day moving averages.

I do not know whether the two zeroes recorded on 30th and 31st January 2023 are real or result from some sort of data issue.

&There is a major discrepancy between the cumulative total announced for Saturday 14th May 2022 and the case numbers for that day. The explanation is that “Between 5th and 20th May 2022, approximately 28,000 cases of COVID-19 diagnosed between November 2021 and January 2021 (presumably 2022) will be retrospectively uploaded on CIDR”. This means the peak around Christmas 2022 was much higher than it appears in the figure.

*There is an unexplained discrepancy between the 3578 official new cases announced in 9th November 2021 (3578) and the increase in the total (5331) announced the same day. The moving averages after this date use the official figure.

Partial data only have been provided since 15th May owing to problems arising from a ransomware attack on the HSE IT systems.

On 1st July 2021 a press briefing said 2 deaths had been recorded since 30th June, however the total jumped by 11 to 5000 so I have used 11 as the daily case figure for that day.

On 29th June 2021 I updated the running totals according to the HSE dashboard to show an additional 40 deaths but no data has been released showing when these deaths occurred. I also corrected my running total of cases, which was off by 157 compared to the official figure.

You will find discrepancies on several days between the cumulative totals (for both cases and deaths) and the result of adding the daily increment to the previous day’s total. This is because of the `denotification’ of old cases. For example, there is a discrepancy of 7 between the total cases recorded on 5th June and the previous day’s total; on 5th June the Department of Health explained that this was due to 7 cases having been ‘denotified’. This also happens when deaths previous attributed to Covid-19 are no longer regarded as such. Some websites are deducting denotifications from the daily reported figure, but since these might refer to much older cases I think it’s more instructive to keep the daily figure as that reported but adjust the running total by the number of denotifications.

Other notes:

*The figures for 10th April to 19th April include a backlog of results returned from labs in Germany which should be attributed to earlier dates; some of the samples were taken up to two weeks earlier. The actual figures returned from testing in Ireland were: April 10th – 480; April 11th – 553; April 12th – 430; April 13th – 527; April 14th – 548; April 15th – 657. April 16th – 629; April 17th – 597; April 18th – 630; April 19th – 445.

#The new cases figure for 14th May includes 223 historical cases notified late. These are included in the overall total but not in the daily figure. The total reported on this day was 426.

^The total deaths figure for 24th April includes 185 ‘probables’ that lack laboratory confirmation. I have included these in the total but not in the daily figure.

~The figure of 46 new cases on June 13th includes 22 cases that arise from tests performed on 8th & 9th June and would normally have been reported on 10th & 11th June.

&Nine deaths were reported on 23rd July, but 8 of these were late reports of deaths from April, May and June. I have increased the cumulative total by 9 but as only one is new that is the figure quoted in the list.
