Weekly Update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics – 14/03/2026

It’s Saturday once more, so it’s time for another update of activity at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update we have published a further four papers, bringing the number in Volume 9 (2026) to 51 and the total so far published by OJAp up to 499. I hoped we would reach 500 this week, but that milestone will have to wait. We have however passed the 50 mark for this year, so we have now published more papers so far in 2026 than we published in all of 2023.

I will continue to include the posts made on our Mastodon account (on Fediscience) to encourage you to visit it. Mastodon is a really excellent service, and a more than adequate replacement for X/Twitter (which nobody should be using); these announcements also show the DOI for each paper.

The first paper to report this week is “Effect of temperature on the structure of porous dust aggregates formed by coagulation” by Lucas Kolanz, Davide Lazzati and Job Guidos (Oregon State University, USA). This study uses 3D simulations to examine how temperature and monomer size distribution affect the structure of dust formed in supernovae at high redshift. It was published on Monday March 9th in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics: "Effect of temperature on the structure of porous dust aggregates formed by coagulation" by Lucas Kolanz, Davide Lazzati and Job Guidos (Oregon State University, USA)

The second paper for this week is “Intrinsic alignment of disks and ellipticals across hydrodynamical simulations” by M. L. van Heukelum and N. E. Chisari (Utrecht University, The Netherlands). This is one of two papers published on Tuesday 10th March. This one is in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies: it examines the inconsistent correlations between galaxy positions and shapes, comparing disk and elliptical shapes in different simulations. The results highlight the importance of sub-grid physics at non-linear scales.

Next one up is “A Comparison of Galacticus and COZMIC WDM Subhalo Populations” by Jack Lonergan (U. Southern California), Andrew Benson (Carnegie Observatories) and Xiaolong Du (UCLA), all based in the USA. This paper was published on 10th March 2026 in the folder Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics. The study compares warm dark matter subhalo populations using the Galacticus model and COZMIC simulations, finding both can reliably reproduce these distributions, with Galacticus offering computational efficiency.Abstractfor A Comparison of Galacticus and COZMIC WDM Subhalo Populations.

And finally for this week we have “Simulation-Based Inference for Probabilistic Galaxy Detection and Deblending” by Ismael Mendoza (U. Maryland, USA) and 7 others (all based in the USA) on behalf of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration. This was published on Thursday March 12th in the folder Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics. The article introduces the Bayesian Light Source Separator (BLISS), for detecting and measuring galaxy properties in wide-field cosmological surveys. BLISS demonstrates improved performance, particularly for faint and blended objects.

Weekly Update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics – 15/02/2025

Time for another quick update of papers published at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update we have published two new papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 14 and the total so far published by OJAp up to 249.

Here are quick descriptions of the two papers concerned; you can click on the images of the overlays to make them larger should you wish to do so.

First one up is “AI-assisted super-resolution cosmological simulations IV: An emulator for deterministic realizations” by Xiaowen Zhang & Patrick Lachance (Carnegie Mellon), Ankita Dasgupta (Penn State), Rupert A. C. Croft & Tiziana Di Matteo (Carnegie Mellon), Yueying Ni (Harvard), Simeon Bird (UC Riverside) and Yin Li (Shenzhen University, China).  It presents a method of achieving super-resolution to rapidly enhance low-resolution runs with statistically correct fine details to generate accurate simulations and mock observations for large galaxy surveys and was published on Monday 10th February 2025 in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics.

The second paper, published on Friday 14th February 2025 in the folder Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics is “The Blending ToolKit: A simulation framework for evaluation of galaxy detection and deblending” which describes a modular suite of Python software for exploring and analyzing systematic effects related to blended galaxy images in cosmological surveys. It was written by Ismael Mendoza (U. Michigan, Ann Arbor, USA) and 19 others, on behalf of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration. I don’t have time to list all the authors here but you can find them on the overlay here:

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s time to announce yet another new paper at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. In fact it’s a little overdue, because we published this one on Friday 12th May, but I just got round to posting it on here.

The latest paper is the 16th paper so far in Volume 6 (2023) and the 81st in all. The primary classification for this paper is Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics and its title is “Metadetection Weak Lensing for the Vera C. Rubin Observatory“. I added the link to Wikipedia myself for those who might be unfamiliar with the Rubin Observatory.

The authors are Erin Sheldon (Brookhaven National Laboratory, NY, USA), Matthew Becker (Argonne National Laborary, IL, USA), Michael Jarvis (University of Pennsylvania, PA) and Robert Armstrong (Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, CA) – all in the USA – and the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration, who have published a significant number of publications with OJAp. In fact, we’ll have another one in a day or two.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s time once more to announce a new paper at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. The latest paper is the 13th paper so far in Volume 6 (2023) and the 78th in all. This one is another for the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics and its title is “The catalog-to-cosmology framework for weak lensing and galaxy clustering for LSST”.

The lead author is Judit Prat of the University of Chicago (Illinois, USA) and there are 21 co-authors from elsewhere in the USA and in the UK. The paper is written on behalf of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration (LSST DESC), which is the international science collaboration that will make high accuracy measurements of fundamental cosmological parameters using data from the Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST). The OJAp has published a number of papers involving LSST DESC, and I’m very happy that such an important consortium has chosen to publish with us.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s time to announce yet another new paper at the Open Journal of Astrophysics Open Journal of Astrophysics. This was published last week (on 15th February 2023) but there was a slight delay in getting the DOI activated and all the metadata registered so I waited until that was done before announcing the paper here.

The latest paper is the 8th paper in Volume 6 (2023) as well as the 73rd in all. This one is another one for the folder marked Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics. The title is “The N5K Challenge: Non-Limber Integration for LSST Cosmology”. The paper is about ways of avoiding using the ubiquitous Limber Approximation which, I discovered this morning, is now 70 years old, Nelson Limber’s original paper on the subject having been published in January 1953.

The lead author of the paper is Danielle Leonard of Newcastle University and there are ten co-authors from around the world in countries including UK, USA, Brazil, Germany, Spain, Switzerland and France on behalf of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Well, it may be a Bank Holiday here in Ireland but there’s no break for the Open Journal of Astrophysics and it’s time to announce yet another paper hot off the press.

The latest paper is the 5th paper in Volume 6 (2023) as well as the 70th in all. This one is in the folder marked Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics. The title is “PSFs of coadded images”; for those of you not up with the lingo, “PSF” stands for point spread function.

The authors of this paper are Rachel Mandelbaum (1), Mike Jarvis (2), Robert H. Lupton (3), James Bosch (3), Arun Kannawadi (3), Michael D. Murphy (1) and Tianqing Zhang (1) and the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration. The affiliations of the individual authors are: (1) Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh PA; (2) University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia PA; (3) Princeton University, Princeton NJ; all in the USA of course.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s a New Year and therefore a new Volume of the Open Journal of Astrophysics and it’s time to announce the first publication in it! This one is the 1st paper in Volume 5 (2022) and the 49th in all.

The latest publication is entitled Validating Synthetic Galaxy Catalogs for Dark Energy Science in the LSST Era and is written by Eve Kovacs of Argonne National Laboratory and 38 others on behalf of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Time to announce another publication in the Open Journal of Astrophysics. This one is the 13th paper in Volume 4 (2021) and the 44th in all.

The latest publication is entitled  The LSST-DESC 3x2pt Tomography Optimization Challengeand is in the folder marked Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics, and is especially relevant for cosmology. The paper is led by Joe Zuntz of the University of Edinburgh, and there are 27 authors altogether, scattered across the globe, representing the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Time to announce another publication in the Open Journal of Astrophysics. This one was published yesterday, actually, but I didn’t get time to post about it until just now. It is the second paper in Volume 4 (2021).

The latest publication is entitled Characterizing the Sample Selection for Supernova Cosmology and is written by Alex G. Kim on behalf of the LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.  It’s nice to be getting papers from large collaborations like this!
