Six New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Regular readers of this blog (both of them) will have noticed that I didn’t post an update of activity at the Open Journal of Astrophysics last weekend. Despite having accepted several papers for publication in the preceding week, no final versions had made it onto the arXiv. We can’t published a paper until the authors post the final version, so that meant a bit of a backlog developed. This week included one day with no arXiv update (owing to a US holiday on Tuesday 8th October) and a major glitch on Crossref on Thursday which delayed a couple, but even so we’ve published six papers which is the most we’ve ever managed in a week. This week saw the publication of our 200th article; the total as of today is 202.  The count in Volume 7 (2024) is now up to 87; we have four papers in the queue for publication so we should pass 90 next week if all goes well.

In chronological order, the six papers published this week, with their overlays, are as follows. You can click on the images of the overlays to make them larger should you wish to do so.

First one up, published on Monday 7th October 2024 is “z~2 dual AGN host galaxies are disky: stellar kinematics in the ASTRID Simulation” by Ekaterina Dadiani (CMU; Carnegie Mellon U.) Tiziana di Matteo (CMU), Nianyi Chen (CMU), Patrick Lachance (CMU), Yue Shen (U. Illinois at Urbana-Champaign), Yu-Ching Chen (Johns Hopkins U.), Rupert Croft (CMU), Yueying Ni (CfA Harvard) and Simeon Bird (U. California Riverside) – all based in the USA. The paper, which is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies describes a numerical study of the morphology of AGN host galaxies containing close pairs of black holes.

The second paper to announce, published on 8th October 2024, is “Origin of LAMOST J1010+2358 Revisited” by S.K. Jeena and Projjwal Banerjee of the Indian Institute of Technology Palakkad, Kerala, India. This paper discusses  the possible formation mechanisms for Very Metal Poor (VMP) stars and the implications for the origin of LAMOST J1010+2358 and is in the folder marked Solar and Stellar Astrophysics.

The third paper is very different in both style and content: “Assessing your Observatory’s Impact: Best Practices in Establishing and Maintaining Observatory Bibliographies” by Raffaele D’Abrusco (Harvard CfA and 14 others; the Observatory Bibliographers Collaboration) and is in the folder marked Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics. It presents discussion of the methods used by astronomical observatories to construct and analyze bibliographic databases. The overlay is here:

The fourth paper, also published on 8th October 2024, and our 200th publication, is in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, and is called “CombineHarvesterFlow: Joint Probe Analysis Made Easy with Normalizing Flows“. The authors are Peter L. Taylor, Andrei Cuceu, Chun-Hao To, and Erik A. Zaborowski of Ohio State University, USA. The article presents a new method that speeds up the sampling of joint posterior distributions in the context of inference using combinations of data sets. The overlay is here

The fifth paper in this batch is “Estimating Exoplanet Mass using Machine Learning on Incomplete Datasets” by Florian Lalande (Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology), Elizabeth Tasker (Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, Kanagawa) and Kenji Doya (Okinawa); all based in Japan. This one was published on 10th October 2024 in the folder marked Earth and Planetary Astrophysics. It compares different methods for inferring exoplanet masses in catalogues with missing data

Finally for this week we have “Forecasting the accuracy of velocity-field reconstruction” by Chris Blake and Ryan Turner of Swinburne University of Technology, Melbourne, Australia. This was also published on 10th October 2024 and is in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics. The paper describes a numerical study of the reliability and precision of different methods of velocity-density reconstruction. The overlay is here

Four New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Once again, it’s time for a quick update of activity at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. This week we have published another batch of four papers which takes the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 77 and the total published altogether by OJAp up to 192. Things are picking up again after the summer lull, and we’re moving towards a double century. If we keep up a steady average of four per week we’ll be at 200 per year.

In chronological order, the four papers published this week, with their overlays, are as follows. You can click on the images of the overlays to make them larger should you wish to do so.

First one up is “Quasi-two-dimensionality of three-dimensional, magnetically dominated, decaying turbulence” by Shreya Dwivedi, Chandranathan Anandavijayan, and Pallavi Bhat of TIFR, Bangalore, India. The paper presents an analysis of numerical simulations of MHD turbulence using Minkowski Functionals, with implications for local anisotropies revealed therein. It was published on 9th September 2024 and is in the folder marked High-Energy Astrophysical Phenomena.

The second paper to announce, also published on 9th September 2024, is “mochi_class: Modelling Optimisation to Compute Horndeski In class” by  Matteo Cataneo (Universität Bonn, Germany) and Emilio Bellini (SISSA, Trieste, Italy). This article presents a cosmological Einstein-Boltzmann solver adapted to work with Horndeski gravity, together with validation tests. It is in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics.

The third paper, published on 11th September 2024 in the folder marked High-Energy Astrophysical Phenomena, is by Jonathan Katz of Washington University, St Louis, USA. The title is “The Sources of Fast Radio Bursts” and it presents a discussion of the possible physical origin of Fast Radio Bursts, arguing that they fall into two distinct groups.

Last in this batch, but by no means least, is “RMS asymmetry: a robust metric of galaxy shapes in images with varied depth and resolution” by Elizaveta Sazonova (U. Waterloo, Canada) with 15 other authors spread around the world (in Canada, USA, Australia, Italy, Chile, UK, Poland, Mexico, Germany, and Spain). This paper presents a method of quantifying distortion of galaxy images connected with mergers or other instabilities. It is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies and was published on September 12th 2024 with this overlay:

Two New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s Saturday morning again so here’s another report on activity at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics.  Since the last update we have published two more papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 73 and the total published by OJAp up to 188.  We’ve still got a few in the pipeline waiting for the final versions to appear on arXiv so I expect we’ll reach the 200 mark fairly soon.

The first paper of the most recent pair, published on September 4th 2024,  and in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies, is “Massive Black Hole Seeds”  by John Regan of the Department of Theoretical Physics at Maynooth University and Marta Volonteri (Sorbonne Université, Paris, France). This article presents a discussion of the pathways to the formation of massive black holes, including both light and heavy initial seeds.

Those of you who are paying attention will see that there is a bit of a glitch on the left hand side where software has thrown a line break in between the two author names. I have no idea what caused this so I raised a ticket with Scholastica and no doubt it will soon be fixed.  (Update: it is now fixed, 12th September 2024). The second paper has the title “The future of cosmological likelihood-based inference: accelerated high-dimensional parameter estimation and model comparison” and was published on 5th September 2024. The authors are Davide Piras (Université de Genève), Alicja Polanska (MSSL) , Alessio Spurio Mancini (Royal Holloway, London), Matthew A. Price(UCL) & Jason D. McEwen (UCL); the latter four are all based in the UK. This paper, which is in  the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, describes an accelerated approach to Bayesian inference in higher-dimensional settings, as required for cosmology, based on recent developments in machine learning and its underlying technology.

I am back in circulation after my little break and, since it’s Saturday, I will resume blogging with another report on activity at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics.  Since the last update we have published two more papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 71 and the total published by OJAp up to 186.  We’ve still got a few in the pipeline waiting for the final versions to appear on arXiv so I expect we’ll reach the 200 mark fairly soon.

The first paper of the most recent pair, published on August 26th 2024,  is “Impact of lensing of gravitational waves on the observed distribution of neutron star masses”  by Sofia Canevarolo, Loek van Vonderen and Nora Elisa Chisari, all of Utrecht University in the Netherlands. This article presents a discussion of the bias in neutron star mass determinations caused by gravitational lensing of the gravitational waves they produceThe paper is in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics.

The second paper has the title “FORGE’d in FIRE III: The IMF in Quasar Accretion Disks from STARFORGE” and was published (in the early hours of the morning) on 29th August 2024. The authors, all based in the USA, are Philip F. Hopkins (Caltech), Michael Y. Grudic (Carnegie Observatories), Kyle Kremer (Caltech), Stella S. R. Offner (UT Austin), David Guszejnov (UT Austin) and Anna L. Rosen (UCSD). This paper, which is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies, presents a numerical study of star formation and the initial mass function in quasar accretion disks. New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s Saturday morning and time for the usual weekly update of publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. This will be a short post because there is only one paper to report this week, being  the 68th paper in Volume 7 (2024)  and the 183rd  altogether. It was published on Thursday August 15th 2024.

The title of the latest paper is is “Spatial segregation of massive clusters in a simulation of colliding dwarf galaxies” and it  is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies. The authors are Bruce Elmegreen (IBM, NY, USA) and Natalia Lahen (MPA Garching, Germany);  the paper presents a numerical study of the properties and spatial distribution of star clusters resulting from a collision between dwarf galaxies.

Three New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s Saturday so it’s time once again for another roundup of business at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics. After last week’s summer lull, this week I have three papers to announce, which brings the total we have published so far this year (Vol. 7) to 67 and the total published by OJAp to 182.

First one up, published on 7th August 2024, is “Brightest Cluster Galaxy Offsets in Cold Dark Matter” by Jonathan Katz of Washington University (St Louis, Missouri, USA),  a simulation-based study of the distribution of the position of brightest cluster galaxies relative to the dark matter distribution and its possible use as a cosmological probe.  The authors are Cian Roche (MIT), Michael McDonald (MIT), Josh Borrow (MIT), Mark Vogelsberger (MIT), Xuejian Shen (MIT), Volker Springel (MPA Garching), Lars Hernquist (Harvard), Ruediger Pakmor (Harvard), Sownak Bose (Durham, UK) and Rahul Kannan (York U., Canada). This paper is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies.

The second paper to present is “LAMOST J1010+2358 is not a Pair-Instability Supernova Relic” by five authors based in the USA: Pierre Thibodeaux (Chicago), Alexander P. Ji (Chicago), William Cerny (Yale), Evan N. Kirby (Notre Dame) and Joshua D. Simon (Carnegie Observatories) .  As the title makes clear, the paper presents arguments against previous claims that a particular star is not a pair-instability supernova relic. This paper is in the folder marked Solar and Stellar Astrophysics. It was published on Friday August 9th 2024.

Last, but by no means least, comes  “A Pilot Search for Gravitational Self-Lensing Binaries with the Zwicky Transient Facility“, results of a trial search for signals of gravitational lensing of one component in a binary system by a compact companion, with a discussion of future prospects for larger surveys. This one, which was also published on 9th August, is in the folder marked High-Energy Astrophysical Phenomena. The authors are Allison Crossland & Eric C Bellm (U. Washington), Courtney Klein (UC Irvine), James R. A. Davenport (U. Washington), Thomas Kupfer (Hamburg Observatory) and Steven L. Groom, Russ R. Laher & Reed Riddle (Caltech).

Two New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Another Saturday, another update of the  Open Journal of Astrophysics.  Since the last update we have published two more papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 56 and the total published by OJAp up to 171.  Both these papers were published on Thursday 11th July 2024.

The first paper of the most recent pair, published on July 3rd 2024,  is “Sunyaev-Zeldovich signatures from non-thermal, relativistic electrons using CMB maps” by Sandeep Kumar Acharya of The Open University of Israel, Ra’anana, Israel.  This article presents a discussion the possible effects of non-thermal electron energy distributions on the form of Sunyaev-Zeldovich distortions and how they might be measured. The paper is in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics.

The second paper has the title “On the contribution of dwarf galaxies to reionization of the Universe” and is by Zewei Wu and Andrey Kravtsov of the University of Chicago in the USA. This paper, which is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies, presents a model of galaxy formation that suggests that radiation from very faint galaxies may contribute significantly to the reionization of the Universe.

Two New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s Saturday morning in Barcelona, and time to post another update relating to the  Open Journal of Astrophysics.  Since the last update we have published two more papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 47 and the total published by OJAp up to 162. We actually accepted four papers last week, but so far only two final versions have appeared on the arXiv.

The first paper of the most recent pair – published on  Friday 14th June – is “Spectroscopic Confirmation of an Ultra-Massive Galaxy in a Protocluster at z 4.9″ . The author list has a strong University of California flavour: Stephanie M. Urbano Stawinski (UC Irvine), M. C. Cooper (UC Irvine), Ben Forrest (UC Davis) , Adam Muzzin (York University, Canada), Danilo Marchesini (Tufts University), Gillian Wilson (UC Merced), Percy Gomez (Keck Observatories, USA), Ian McConachie (UC Riverside), Z. Cemile Marsan (York University, Canada), Marianna Annuziatella (Centro de Astrobiología CSIC-INTA, Spain) and Wenjun Chang (UC Riverside).

This paper presents an investigation of a cluster system involving a massive galaxy using Keck spectroscopy with determination of its redshift and star formation properties. The results pose a challenge for theorists. The paper is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies.

The second paper, also published on Friday 14th June and has the title “Boil-off of red supergiants: mass loss and type II-P supernovae” by Jim Fuller (Caltech) and  Daichi Tsuna (Caltech, USA and University of Tokyo, Japan). This one, which is in the folder marked Solar and Stellar Astrophysics, discusses A new model for stellar mass loss which predicts that low-mass red supergiants lose less mass than commonly assumed, while high-mass red supergiants lose more.

Three New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s time once more for the usual  Saturday roundup of business at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics. The latest batch of publications consists of three papers, taking the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 39 and the total published by OJAp up to 154. We’re still on track to publish around 100 papers this year, compared to last year’s 50.

All three of this week’s papers involve use of data from the European Space Agency’s Gaia mission, which is proving an immensely rich resource for astrophysics.

First one up is “Asymmetric Drift Map of the Milky Way Disk Populations between 8 -16 kpc with LAMOST and Gaia datasets” which is by  Xin Li (Nanchong, China), Peng Yang (Chengdu, China) , Hai-Feng Wang (Nanchong, China), Qing Li (Jiangmen, China), Yang-Ping Luo (Nanchong, China), Zhi-Quan Luo (Nanchong, China), Guan-Yu Wang (Nanchong, China). This is a study  of the asymmetric drift, the difference of the local circular speed and the mean rotational speed of the stellar population, for various stellar populations in the Milky Way. It is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies and was published on Tuesday 14th May 2024.

The second paper to announce is “On the formation of a 33 solar-mass black hole in a low-metallicity binary” by Kareem El-Badry (Caltech, USA). It discusses theoretical models for the formation of a black hole in a particular binary system discovered in Gaia data.

This one is in the folder Solar and Stellar Astrophysics and was published on 16th May 2024. The overlay looks like this:

The last paper of this batch, also in the in the folder Solar and Stellar Astrophysics, is entitled “Compact Binary Formation in Open Star Clusters II: Difficulty of Gaia NS formation in low-mass star clusters”  and it presents a discussion of the formation of binary neutron stars and black holes found in Gaia data based on their orbital properties. It was published on Friday May 17th 2024 (i.e. yesterday). The authors are Ataru Tanikawa (Fukui University, Japan), Long Wang (Sun-yat Sen University, China) and  Michiko S. Fujii (Tokyo University, Japan).

Three New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s time for the usual  Saturday roundup of business at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics. The latest batch of publications consists of three papers, taking the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 30 and the total published by OJAp up to 145.

First one up is “Baryonic Imprints on DM Halos: the concentration-mass relation and its dependence on halo and galaxy properties” .  The authors, Mufan Shao and Dhayaa Anbajagane of the University of Chicago, USA, use  a non-linear model informed by simulations to study the imprint of galaxy formation physics on the concentration-mass relationship using various different choices of halo selection criteria. This one is in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies and was published on 24th April 2024.

The second paper to announce is “Variability in SSTc2d J163134.1-240100, a brown dwarf with quasi-spherical mass loss” which describes a search for variability in a brown dwarf star known to be losing mass and the implications of the lack thereof for the reason for the outflow therefrom. The authors are Aleks Scholz (St Andrews, UK),  Koraljka Muzic (Lisbon, Portugal), Victor Almendros-Abad (Palermo, Italy), Antonella Natta (DIAS, Ireland), Dary Ruiz-Rodriguez (NRAO, USA), Lucas Cieza (Uni. Diego Portales, Chile), Cristina Rodriguez-Lopez (IAA-CSIC, Granada, Spain)

This one is in the folder Solar and Stellar Astrophysics and was also published on 24th April 2024. The overlay looks like this:

The last paper of this batch, also in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies, is  entitled “MAGICS I. The First Few Orbits Encode the Fate of Seed Massive Black Hole Pairs”  and is a computational study of the process by which massive black holes are formed by merging smaller seed black holes. It was published on April 26th 2024 (i.e. yesterday). The authors are: Nianyi Chen, Diptajyoti Mukherjee and Tiziana Di Matteo (all Carnegie Mellon University); Yueying Ni (Harvard); Simeon Bird (University of California, Riverside); and Rupert Croft (Carnegie Mellon University). All authors are based in the USA.
