Three New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Time for another roundup of business at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics. This time I have three papers to announce, which brings the total we have published so far this year (Vol. 7) to 45 and the total published by OJAp to 160. We’re still on track to publish around 100 papers this year or more, compared to last year’s 50.

First one up, published on 3rd June 2024, is “Log-Normal Waiting Time Widths Characterize Dynamics” by Jonathan Katz of Washington University (St Louis, Missouri, USA). This paper presents a discussion of the connection between waiting time distributions and dynamics for aperiodic astrophysical systems, with emphasis on log-normal distributions.  This paper is in the folder marked High-Energy Astrophysical Phenomena.

The second paper to present is “An Empirical Model For Intrinsic Alignments: Insights From Cosmological Simulations” by Nicholas Van Alfen (Northeastern University, Boston, USA), Duncan Campbell (Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, USA), Jonathan Blazek (Northeastern University), C. Danielle Leonard (Newcastle University, UK), Francois Lanusse (Université Paris-Saclay, France), Andrew Hearin (Argonne National Laboratory, USA), Rachel Mandelbaum (Carnegie Mellon University) and The LSST Dark Energy Science Collaboration.  This paper presents an extension of the halo model (specifically the Halo Occupation Distribution, HOD) to include intrinsic alignment effects for the study of weak gravitational lensing. This paper is in the folder marked Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics. It was published on Tuesday June 4th 2024.

Last, but by no means least, comes  “Towards Cosmography of the Local Universe”  which proposes the multipoles of the distance-redshift relation as new cosmological observables that have a direct physical interpretation in terms of kinematical quantities of the underlying matter flow. This was also published on 4th June. The authors are Julian Adamek (IfA Zurich, Switzerland), Chris Clarkson (Queen Mary, London, UK), Ruth Durrer (Geneva, Switzerland), Asta Heinesen (U. Lyon, France & NBI Copenhagen, Denmark), Martin Kunz (Geneva), and Hayley J. Macpherson (Chicago, USA).

Three New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

After a very busy and unusual week, it’s time to get back to normal with the usual  Saturday roundup of business at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics. If you want to know how many papers we have published so far this year (Vol. 7), the answer is 42. The total published by OJAp is now 157. We’re still on track to publish around 100 papers this year, possibly more, compared to last year’s 50.

All the members of this week’s trio are in the folder marked Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics, and indeed all three relate in one way or another to the topic of weak gravitational lensing.  All three were published on Wednesday 22nd May 2024.

First one up is “Joint constraints from cosmic shear, galaxy-galaxy lensing and galaxy clustering: internal tension as an indicator of intrinsic alignment modelling error” which is by Simon Samuroff (Northeastern U., USA), Andresa Campos (Carnegie Mellon U., USA), Anna Porredon (Bochum, Germany) and Jonathan Blazek (Edinburgh, UK).   A combined statistical approach to the identification of errors arising in cosmic shear analysis due to intrinsic alignments.

The second paper to present is “A unified linear intrinsic alignment model for elliptical and disc galaxies and the resulting ellipticity spectra” by Basundhara Ghosh (Bangalore, India), with Kai Nussbaumer, Eileen Sophie Giesel & Björn Malte Schäfer (Heidelberg, Germany). It presents a discussion of the physical origin of intrinsic alignments of both elliptical and disk galaxies and the implications for cosmological studies

The last paper of this batch is entitled “Neural style transfer of weak lensing mass maps”  and proposes a generative model for the mass-production of weak-lensing maps. The authors are Masato Shirasaki and Shiro Ikeda (both of the University of Tokyo, Japan)

Four New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It is time yet again for an update of recent activity at the Open Journal of Astrophysics.
This week we have published four papers, which I now present to you. These four take the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 36 and the total published by OJAp up to 151. I speculated last week that we would probably pass the 150 mark this week, and so we did. We’re still on target to publish around 100 papers this year.
In chronological order, the four papers published this week, with their overlays, are as follows. You can click on the images of the overlays to make them larger should you wish to do so.
First one up is “Ephemeris Matching Reveals False Positive Validated and Candidate Planets from the K2 Mission” by Drake A. Lehmann (U. Wisconsin-Madison, USA) and Andrew Vanderburg (MIT, USA). It presents a description and application of a technique for identifying false positives among candidate exoplanets. The paper was published on 7th May 2024, is in the folder marked Earth and Planetary Astrophysics, and can be found here.

The second paper to announce is “Accuracy requirements on intrinsic alignments for Stage-IV cosmic shear” which is by by Anya Paopiamsap, Natalia Porqueres & David Alonso (Oxford, UK) and Joachim Harnois-Deraps & C. Danielle Leonard (Newcastle, UK). This paper sets about quantifying the permissible level of disagreement between the true intrinsic galaxy alignments and the theoretical models thereof that can be allowed for future Stage-IV cosmic shear surveys. This one is in the folder marked Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics. The paper was published on May 9th 2024 and you can see the overlay here:

The next paper, is in the folder Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics and is entitled “Optimal Summary Statistics for X-ray Polarization”. The authors are Jeremy Heyl (Uni. British Columbia, Canada), Denis González-Caniulef (Uni. Toulouse, France) and Ilaria Caiazzo (Caltech, USA). This presents new statistical estimators for use in studies of X-ray polarization, with an analytic discussion of their efficiency. The last paper of this batch is called “B-modes from galaxy cluster alignments in future surveys” and is by Christos Georgiou, Thomas Bakx, Juliard van Donkersgoed and Nora Elisa Chisari, all from Utrecht University in The Netherlands. It presents a discussion of the possible detection of cosmic shear B-modes produced by intrinsic alignments in future galaxy surveys.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s my last morning in Phoenix and since I was too busy at the weekend to post the usual update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics I will do so now, before I go to the Airport for my flight home.

Looking at the workflow I see that there is a considerable backlog of papers that have been accepted but are waiting for the authors to put the final version on arXiv.  As a result there is only one paper to report for last week, being the 17th paper in Volume 7 (2024)  and the 132nd altogether; it was published on March 6 2024. I expect more soon!

The title of the latest paper is “Bayesian analysis of a Unified Dark Matter model with transition: can it alleviate the H0tension?” and it  is in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics.  The article presents an investigation using Bayesian techniques of a specific cosmological model, in which dark matter and dark energy are aspects of a single component, with particular emphasis on the Hubble tension.

The authors are seven in number: Emmanuel Frion (University of Helsinki, Finland, and Western University, Canada); David Camarena (University of New Mexico, USA); Leonardo Giani (University of Queensland, Australia); Tays Miranda (University of Helsinki and University of Jyväskylä, both in Finland); Daniele Bertacca (Università degli Studi di Padova, Italy); Valerio Marra (Universidade Federal do Espírito Santo, Brazil and Osservatorio Astronomico di Trieste, Italy);
and Oliver F. Piattella (Università degli Studi dell’Insubria, Como, Italy).

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

With all the excitement of my first weekend in Sydney I completely forgot to post an update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics. In fact there is only one paper to report from last week, being  the 12th paper in Volume 7 (2024)  and the 127th altogether. This one was published on 9th February 2024 and is the first published from Down Under.

The title is “Galaxy Clusters Discovered via the Thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect in the 500-square-degree SPTpol Survey” and it presents a catalogue of 689 galaxy clusters detected through the thermal Sunyaev-Zel’dovich using the dual-frequency polarization-sensitive camera SPTPol on the South Pole Telescope. This one is in the folder called Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics.

This paper has lead author Lindsey Bleem  of the Argonne National Laboratory in the USA and has 127 other authors – too many to list individually here – but you can see them on the overlay below. I see quite a few names of people I know well!

Now that I’m settled in Sydney it’s time to post another update relating to the  Open Journal of Astrophysics.  Since the last update we have published two more papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 11 and the total published by OJAp up to 126. I should have posted these before leaving but it slipped my mind.

Both the current papers discussed here are in the folder marked Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, our most popular category.

Anyway, the first paper of the most recent pair – published on February 1st – is “LimberJack.jl: auto-differentiable methods for angular power spectra analyses”, Jaime Ruiz-Zapatero (Oxford, UK), David Alonso (Oxford, UK), Carlos García-García (Oxford, UK) , Andrina Nicola (Bonn, Germany), Arrykrishna Mootoovaloo (Oxford, UK), Jamie Sullivan (Berkeley, USA), Marco Bonici (Milan, Italy), and Pedro Ferreira (Oxford, UK). This paper presents a fully auto-differentiable code for cosmological analyses of two-point auto- and cross-correlation measurements from galaxy clustering, CMB lensing and weak lensing data written in Julia.

The second paper was published on Friday 2nd February and has the title “Can we constrain structure growth from galaxy proper motions?” which, as its title suggests, looks at the feasibility of using transverse peculiar velocities (i.e. proper motions) of galaxies for cosmological studies. The authors are Iain Duncan (Oxford, UK), David Alonso (Oxford, UK), Anže Slosar (Brookhaven National Laboratory, USA), and Kate Storey-Fisher (New York University, USA). To find out the answer to the question posed in its title you’ll have to read the paper!

Because of the high rate of publications coming out, we’re moving to a system where we register papers in batches once a week rather than individually as they are published. This is just a temporary measure until we can automate this process more fully. Anyway, you can expect another update in a week or so.

Two New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

As the first month of 2024 is now over, I thought I’d post an update relating to the  Open Journal of Astrophysics.  Since the last update we have published two papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 9 (the total for January) and the total published by OJAp up to 124. We will have others soon, but I will be travelling for the first few days of February so the next update will be in a week or so.

Using our sophisticated forecasting algorithm, based on the first month of 2024 as input, I predict that we will publish around 9×12=108 papers in 2024, more than double last year’s total of 50.

Anyway, the first paper of the most recent pair – published on January 30th – is “Capse.jl: efficient and auto-differentiable CMB power spectra emulation”, by Marco Bonici (INAF Milano, Italy & Waterloo, Canada), Federico Bianchini (Stanford, USA) and Jaime Ruiz-Zapatero (Oxford, UK). This paper presents an emulator for rapid and accurate prediction of Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature, polarization, and lensing angular power spectra, that works much faster than traditional methods. The code is written in Julia, in which language we are seeing an increasing number of submissions to OJAp.

The second paper was published yesterday (31st January 2024) and has the title “Cosmological Inflation in N-Dimensional Gaussian Random Fields with Algorithmic Data Compression” which is a  study of inflationary models with Gaussian random potentials for multiple scalar fields, tracking the evolutionary trajectories numerically. The authors are Connor Painter and Emory Bunn, both the Physics Department at the University of Richmond, Virginia (USA). Ted Bunn (as he is usually known) is a longstanding member of the Editorial Board of the Open Journal of Astrophysics (and was thereby excluded from any involvement in the editorial process for this paper).

As promised yesterday, it’s time for a roundup of the week’s business at the  Open Journal of Astrophysics. This past week we have published three papers, taking  the count in Volume 7 (2024) up to 4 and the total published by OJAp up to 119. There are quite a few more ready to go as people return from the Christmas break.

First one up is “Prospects for studying the mass and gas in protoclusters with future CMB observations” by  Anna Gardner and Eric Baxter (Hawaii, USA), Srinivasan Raghunathan (NCSA, USA), Weiguang Cui (Edinburgh, UK), and Daniel Ceverino (Madrid, Spain). This paper, published on 17th January 2024, uses realistic hydrodynamical simulations to probe the ability of CMB Stage 4-like (CMB-S4) experiments to detect and characterize protoclusters via gravitational lensing and the Sunyaev-Zel’dovich effect. This paper is in the category of Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics.

The second paper to announce is “SDSS J125417.98+274004.6: An X-ray Detected Minor Merger Dual AGN” and is by Marko Mićić, Brenna Wells, Olivia Holmes, and Jimmy Irwin (all of the University of Alabama, USA).  This presents the discovery of a dual AGN in a merger between the galaxy SDSS J125417.98+274004.6 and dwarf satellite, studied using X-ray observations from the Chandra satellite. The paper was also published on 18th January 2024 in the category Astrophysics of Galaxies . You can see the overlay here:

The last paper of this batch is  entitled “Population III star formation: multiple gas phases prevent the use of an equation of state at high densities” and the authors are:  Lewis Prole (Maynooth, Ireland), Paul Clark (Cardiff, UK), Felix Priestley (Cardiff, UK), Simon Glover (Heidelberg, Germany) and John Regan (Maynooth, Ireland). This paper, which presents a comparison of results obtained using chemical networks and a simpler equation-of-state approach for primordial star formation (showing the limitations of the latter) was published on 19th January 2024 and also in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies.

New Publication at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

It’s Friday and I thought I’d take  the opportunity before the weekend to announce yet another new paper at the Open Journal of Astrophysics.

The latest paper is the 46th so far in Volume 6 (2023) – just four to go for a half-century – and it’s the 111th altogether. This one was actually published on Wednesday November 29th.

The title is “Optimization and Quality Assessment of Baryon Pasting for Intracluster Gas using the Borg Cube Simulation” and it presents an algorithm for adding baryons to gravity-only simulations via a “pasting” approach. It is in the folder marked Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics.

There are 8 authors: F. Kéruzoré;  L. Bleem; M. Buehlmann;  J.D. Emberson; N. Frontiere; S. Habib; K. Heitmann; and P. Larsen;  all of them based at the Argonne National Laboratory, in Illinois (USA).

Three New Publications at the Open Journal of Astrophysics

Not unexpectedly because of holidays, August has been rather a quiet month at the Open Journal of Astrophysics, but with people returning to work this week business has picked up again and it’s time to announce the last batch (all published this week).

In fact, this week we have published three papers, which I now present to you here. These take the count in Volume 6 (2023) up to 34 and the total published by OJAp up to 99. Who will be the author(s) of the 100th? We will just have to wait and see! I’ll do a special post for whichever paper wins that honour.

In chronological order, the three papers published this week, with their overlays, are as follows. You can click on the images of the overlays to make them larger should you wish to do so.

First one up is “Bright common envelope evolution requires jets” by Noam Soker of Technion, Haifa in Israel. This is a discussion of the role of jets that a main sequence secondary star launches as it enters a common envelope evolution (CEE) with a primary giant star. The paper was published on 28th August, is just the fifth item in the folder marked Solar and Stellar Astrophysics and can be found here.

The second paper to announce is “Almanac: MCMC-based signal extraction of power spectra and maps on the sphere” by Elena Sellentin (Leiden), Arthur Loureiro (Stockholm); Lorne Whiteway (UCL); Javier Lafaurie (Leiden); Sreekumar Balan (UCL); Malak Olamaie (York); and Andrew Jaffe & Alan Heavens (Imperial).  This presents a new software tool called Almanac , which uses Hamiltonian Monte Carlo sampling to infer the underlying all-sky noiseless maps of cosmic structures, together with their auto- and cross-power spectra.

The last paper of this batch paper is in the Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics folder. It is entitled “Neural Network Based Point Spread Function Deconvolution For Astronomical Applications” and the authors are: Hong Wang, Sreevarsha Sreejith, Yuewin, Nesar Ramachandra*, Anze Slosar & Shinjae Yoo, all of the Brookhaven National Laboratory (NY) except * who is at the Argonne National Laboratory (IL), all based in the USA. This paper discusses a neural-network based deconvolution algorithm based on Deep Wiener Deconvolution Network (DWDN) and its performance in an astronomical context.
