Weekly Update from the Open Journal of Astrophysics – 29/11/2025

It’s Saturday again, so it’s time for the usual update of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Publishing this week was interrupted by the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, which meant there were no arXiv announcements yesterday. Nevertheless, since the last update we have published another four papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 184, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 419.

The first paper this week is “A theoretical prediction for the dipole in nearby distances using cosmography” by Hayley J. Macpherson (U. Chicago, USA) and Asta Heinesen (Niels Bohr Institute, Denmark). This was published on Monday 24th November 2025 in the folder Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics. It presents a method to predict the dipole in luminosity distances that arises due to nearby inhomogeneities to leading-order correction to the standard isotropic distance-redshift law. Incidentally, I wrote about a talk by one of the authors here.

The second paper of the week is “A Targeted Gamma-Ray Search of Five Prominent Galaxy Merger Systems with 17 years of Fermi-LAT Data” by Siddhant Manna and Shantanu Desai (IIT Hyderabad Kandi, India). It describes a search for gamma-ray emission in Fermi-LAT data from five merging galaxy systems with marginal detections for two of them

Next one up is “Metallicity fluctuation statistics in the interstellar medium and young stars – II. Elemental cross-correlations and the structure of chemical abundance space” by Mark R. Krumholz (ANU, Australia), Yuan-Sen Ting (Ohio State U., USA), Zefeng Li (Durham U., UK), Chuhan Zhang (ANU), Jennifer Mead (Columbia U., USA) and Melissa K. Ness (ANU). This was published in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies on Wednesday November 26th. It presents an extended stochastically-forced diffusion model for the chemical evolution of galaxies, making quantitative predictions for the degree of correlation in abundance patterns in both gas and young stars.

The fourth and final paper of the week is “Simulating realistic Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies including the effect of radiative transfer” by Hasti Khoraminezhad & Shun Saito (Missouri Institute of Science & Technology, USA), Max Gronke (U. An empirical model for Lyman-alpha emitters (LAEs) which provides predictions for the halo occupation distributions and relationship between luminosity and halo mass, including the distribution of satellite LAEs. Money and Open Access

I was thinking when I did Saturday’s update of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics that I should convey some idea of the amount of money being saved by using Diamond Open Access.

So far this year we have published 181 articles in the Open Journal of Astrophysics. That’s a very small fraction – a few percent – of the output of the established journals in the area, Astrophysical Journal, Astronomy & Astrophysics and Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, MNRAS.

I will take MNRAS as an example for comparison. Last time I looked, the Article Processing Charge (APC) (i.e. publication fee) for a paper submitted there is £2356. Our 181 papers published this year would have cost their authors £426,436 had they had to pay the MNRAS APC. Some – especially in the UK – do not pay directly, but have an equivalent amount taken from their institution(s) via Read-and-Publish agreements. The charge therefore does not come directly from the authors’ funds but from their institution, but that is just splitting hairs. The point about OJAp is that neither authors nor their institutions have to pay.

For comparison, a year’s stipend for a PhD student outside London at UKRI rates is £20,780. That means that the total amount saved by publishing in OJAp rather than MNRAS (£426,436) would be more than the cost of 20 PhD students. It might even be enough (just) to pay your Vice-Chancellor’s salary…

You might well think that is a trivial amount of money compared to the total circulating in science funding, but the real point is that it represents only a tiny fraction of the money being siphoned off from astrophysics research into other activities. Taking all the APCs paid (or page charges or other words that mean “publication fee”) to all the journals, the total figure is probably at least 50 times the £426,436 obtained above. That would be a figure in excess of £20 million. That is not a trivial amount of money. Even for a Vice-Chancellor.

Wouldn’t you and your institution rather keep your grant funds to spend on research than hand it over – directly or indirectly – to publishers? I know I would!

The first paper to report this week is “Probing Anisotropic Cosmic Birefringence with Foreground-Marginalised SPT B-mode Likelihoods” by Lennart Balkenhol (Sorbonne Université, France), A. First on the menu for this week is “Dynamical friction and measurements of the splashback radius in galaxy clusters” by Talia M. O’Shea (U. Wisconsin-Madison, USA), Josh Borrow & Stephanie O’Neil (U. Since the last update we have published another five papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 161, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 396.

This week’s update  is rather unusual because there are four papers in a series (or, more precisely, mathematically speaking, a sequence) all published on the same day (Wednesday October 22nd 2025), in the same folder (Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics), with the same first author (Dhayaa Anbajagane of the University of Chicago), with long author lists and many co-authors in common. These papers all relate to the DECADE cosmic shear project. Instead of doing them one by one, therefore, I’ve decided to put all four overlays together and provide links to all the papers afterwards. As I’m trying to encourage people to follow our feed on the Fediverse via Mastodon (where I announce papers as they are published, including the all-important DOI),  I’ll include links to each announcement there too.

The fifth and final paper for this week is “Clustering of DESI galaxies split by thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect” by Michael Rashkovetskyi of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, or CfA for short, and 48 others. This one was published on Wednesday 23rd October in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics. This paper explores how the clustering properties of galaxies mapped by the Dark energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) relate to the local thermal Sunyaev-Zeldovich emission mapped by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope (ACT). It’s time once again for the usual Saturday update of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update we have published four  more papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 156, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 391.

I’d like to encourage people to follow our feed on the Fediverse via Mastodon (where I announce papers as they are published, including the all-important DOI) so this week I’ll include links to each announcement there.

The first paper to report is “Shot noise in clustering power spectra” by Nicolas Tessore (University College London, UK) and Alex Hall (University of Edinburgh, UK). This was published in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics on Tuesday October 14th 2025. This presents a discussion of the effects of ‘shot noise’, an additive contribution due to degenerate pairs of points, in angular galaxy clustering power spectra. Next one up is “The Giant Arc – Filament or Figment?” by Till Sawala and Meri Teeriaho (University of Helsinki, Finland). This paper discusses the abundance of large arc-like structures formed in the standard cosmological model, with reference to the “Giant Arc” identified in MgII absorption systems. The third paper this week,  published on Monday 6th October, is “Detecting wide binaries using machine learning algorithms” by Amoy Ashesh, Harsimran Kaur and Sandeep Aashish (Indian Institute of Technology, Patna, India). This was published on Friday 17th October (yesterday) in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies. It presents a method for detecting wide binary systems in Gaia data using machine learning algorithms.

The last one this week is “Learned harmonic mean estimation of the Bayesian evidence with normalizing flows” by Alicja Polanska & Matthew A. It’s Saturday again, so it’s time for a summary of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update we have published five more papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 146, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 381. At this rate Volume 8 will contain around 190 by the end of 2025.

Anyway, here are this week’s papers, starting with three published on Monday 29th September 2025.

The first paper is “Cosmic Multipoles in Galaxy Surveys II: Comparing Different Methods in Assessing the Cosmic Dipole” by Vasudev Mittal, Oliver T. Oayda and Geraint F. Lewis (U. Sydney, Australia). This is in the folder Cosmology and Nongalactic Astrophysics. It presents a comparison of methods for determining the number count dipole from cosmological surveys with a discussion of the implications for the known discordance with the CMB diple.

The second paper this week, also published on Monday 29th September, is “SDSS-C4 3028: the Nearest Blue Galaxy Cluster Devoid of an Intracluster Medium” by Shweta Jain (University of Kentucky, USA) and 11 others based in the USA, Australia and Korea. This describes a galaxy cluster with an unusually high fraction (about 63%) of star-forming galaxies which may be a result of ram pressure stripping; the article is in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies.

The third one this week, published on also published on Monday 29th September but in the folder Earth and Planetary Astrophysics, is “Comparing the Architectures of Multiplanet Systems from Kepler, K2, and TESS Data” by Robert L Royer and Jason H. Steffen (University of Nevada, USA).  This paper explores the trends seen in exoplanet survey data, including Kepler, TESS, and K2 including many planetary systems with multiple planets.

The next one up is “Seeding Cores: A Pathway for Nuclear Star Clusters from Bound Star Clusters in the First Billion Years” by Fred Angelo Batan Garcia (Columbia University, USA), Massimo Ricotti (University of Maryland, USA) and Kazuyuki Sugimura (Hokkaido University, Japan). This paper was published on Thursday 2nd October in the folder Astrophysics of Galaxies. This is about modelling the formation of Nuclear Star Clusters using cosmological radiation-hydrodynamic simulations, with discussion of the implications for seeding supermassive black holes and the little red dots seen by JWST.

The fifth and last one for this week, published on Friday 3rd October 2025, is “Efficient semi-analytic modelling of Pop III star formation from Cosmic Dawn to Reionization” by Sahil Hegde and Steven R. Furlanetto (University of Californi Los Angeles, USA).  This is also in the folder marked Astrophysics of Galaxies. It uses a self-consistent analytic model to trace the formation of the first stars from their birth through the first billion years of the universe’s history. complementing semi-analytic and computational methods.

The first paper to report this week is “The Moon as a possible source for Earth’s co-orbital bodies” by Rafael Sfair, L. C. Gomes, O. C. Winter & R. A. Moraes (São Paulo State University, Brazil), G. Borderes-Motta (Astronomical Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences, Czech Republic) and C. M. Schäfer (Universität Tübingen, Germany). This paper was published on Monday 15th September, in the folder Earth and Planetary Astrophysics, and it presents a numerical exploration of the ejection velocities and launch locations necessary for lunar ejecta to evolve into Earth’s co-orbital bodies.

The second paper this week, published on Friday 19th September in the folder Solar and Stellar Astrophysics, is  “Jet-Driven Formation of Bipolar Rings in Planetary Nebulae: Numerical Simulations Inspired by NGC 1514” by Muhammad Akashi, Ealeal Bear, and Noam Soker (Technion, Haifa, Israel). This paper presents evidence from numerical simulations notion that jets play a substantial role in shaping planetary nebulae (PNe).

It’s Saturday again, so it’s time for another summary of the week’s new papers at the Open Journal of Astrophysics. Since the last update we have published seven new papers, which brings the number in Volume 8 (2025) up to 134, and the total so far published by OJAp up to 369. We seem to be emerging for the slight late-summer hiatus we have experienced over the last few weeks.

Anyway, the first paper to report this week is “Observing the Sun with the Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST): Forecasting Full-disk Observations” by Mats Kirkaune & Sven Wedemeyer (U. Oslo, Norway), Joshiwa van Marrewijk (Leiden U., Netherlands), Tony Mroczkowski (ESO, Garching, Germany) and Thomas W. Morris (Yale, USA). This paper discusses possible strategies and parameters for full-disk observations of the Sun using the proposed Atacama Large Aperture Submillimeter Telescope (AtLAST). It was published on Tuesday 9th September 2025 in the folder Solar and Stellar Astrophysics.

The second paper this week, published on Wednesday 10th September in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, is “The exact non-Gaussian weak lensing likelihood: A framework to calculate analytic likelihoods for correlation functions on masked Gaussian random fields” by Veronika Oehl and Tilman Tröster (ETH Zurich, Switzerland).  This paper shows how to calculate likelihoods for the correlation functions of spin-2 Gaussian random fields defined on the sphere in the presence of a mask with applications to weak gravitational lensing.

Next one up, the third paper this week, is  “Subspace Approximation to the Focused Transport Equation. II. The Modified Form” by B. Klippenstein and Andreas Shalchi (U. Manitoba, Canada). This was also published on 10th September 2025 in the folder Solar and Stellar Astrophysics. It is about solving the focused transport equation analytically and numerically using the subspace method in two or more dimensions.

The fourth paper of this week was also published on Wednesday 10th September. It is “Mass models of galaxy clusters from a non-parametric weak-lensing reconstruction” by Tobias Mistele (Case Western Reserve U., USA), Federico Lelli (INAF, Firenze, Italy), Stacy McGaugh (Case Western), James Schombert (U. Oregon, USA) and Benoit Famaey (Université de Strasbourg, France).  Published in the folder Cosmology and NonGalactic Astrophysics, it presents new, non-parametric deprojection method for weak gravitational lensing applied to a sample of galaxy clusters. The fifth paper of the week is “A Swift Fix II: Physical Parameters of Type I Superluminous Supernovae” by Jason T. Hinkle & Benjamin J. Shappee (U. Hawaii, USA) and Michael A. Tucke (Ohio State, USA). This one was published on Thursday 11th September 2025 in the folder High-Energy Astrophysical Phenomena. The paper uses recalibrated Swift photometry to recompute peak luminosities and other properties of a sample of superluminous Type I supernovae. The overlay is here:

Paper No. 6 for this week is “Detailed Microwave Continuum Spectra from Bright Protoplanetary Disks in Taurus” by Caleb Painter (Harvard, USA) and 11 others, too numerous to mention by name, based in the USA, Germany, Mexico and Taiwan.  This one was published in the folder marked Solar and Stellar Astrophysics on September 11th 2025. It presents new observations sampling the microwave (4-360 GHz) continuum spectra from eight young stellar systems in the Taurus region. The overlay is here:

The last paper for this update is “On Soft Clustering For Correlation Estimators” by Edward Berman (Northeastern University, USA) and 13 others based in the USA, France, Denmark and Finland and Cosmos-Web:The JWST Cosmic Origins Survey. This was published on Friday 12th September 2025 in the folder Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics. It presents an algorithm for estimating correlations that clusters objects in a probabilistic fashion, enabling the uncertainty caused by clustering to be quantified simply through model inference. And that’s all the papers for this week. I’ve noticed a significant recent increase in the number of papers in Solar and Stellar Astrophysics, which means we’re broadening our impact across the community. Which is nice.

P.S. I found out last week that, according to NASA/ADS, papers in OJAp have now accumulated over 5000 citations.
